Blastomycosis

Blastomycosis, a severe fungal disease affecting humans and other mammals, is caused by environmentally acquired infection with thermally dimorphic fungi from the Blastomyces genus. Our company excels in the field of blastomycosis by offering comprehensive services that cater to the needs of researchers and scientists.

Overview of Blastomycosis

Blastomycosis is a serious fungal infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. The genetic and geographic diversity of these pathogens is now recognized to be more extensive than previously thought. Besides Blastomyces dermatitidis and the cryptic species Blastomyces gilchristii responsible for blastomycosis in certain regions of North America, atypical cases can also be traced back to Blastomyces helicus in the western U.S. and Blastomyces percursus in Africa.

Pathogenesis of Blastomycosis

Blastomycosis is contracted by breathing in fungal spores found in the surroundings. Within the lungs, these spores shift into the pathogenic yeast form, potentially disseminating through the bloodstream to other organs. Pulmonary complications are predominant, varying from mild, self-resolving instances to severe, life-threatening conditions like adult respiratory distress syndrome.

Vaccine and Therapeutics Development for Blastomycosis

Vaccine development.

Vaccine Development

Researchers have explored various approaches, including subunit vaccines, live-attenuated vaccines, and DNA vaccines, targeting different antigens (such as BAD-1) from Blastomyces dermatitidis.

Therapeutics Development

The mainstay of therapy for blastomycosis has been the use of antifungal medications, primarily the azole class of drugs including itraconazole and voriconazole, as well as amphotericin B.
